Old Herring Smokehouse

Join the team as we enter this Old Herring Smokehouse for it’s first ever Paranormal Investigation. Built into the medieval town walls this beautifully preserved 700-year-old Smokehouse in the heart of what was once Europe’s largest herring fishing site. Millions of herring (“Silver Darlings”) were fished and processed annually. Many would have made their way to this building to be smoked. Five generations of the Heyhoe family smoked herring here until its closure in 1965. Over the years many drifters found work here, thousands of Scottish women (“The Herring Girls”) travelled here annually to gut, salt and pack the fish. One of the buildings most unique features is that it was built using salvaged shipwreck timbers from along the coast. Rooms and stairs are held up by masts, keels and rudders. Shipwrecked objects and items adorn every room, harnessing the memories of the souls lost at sea. Very little is known about the Paranormal history of the smokehouse. The current owner, along with other visitors to the smokehouse have seen what they thought to be a man out the corner of their eye on many occasions in the smokehouse. He has been given the name Old Charlie hopefully he will make an appearance for our visit.
